The commissioners for improving the roads in the town of Jamaica have still in their hands about $40,000. Hillside avenue was embraced in the scheme of improvement, but as yet nothing has been done with that thoroughfare. Certainly the north side of the town should have one good road. It may be that the commissioners have delayed this improvement because of the desire to also improve South street; but South street, it seems to us, has dropped out of consideration altogether by reason of the granting of a franchise for a railroad upon it, for under the law no railroad can be laid on a macadamized highway. Under the circumstances, the commissioners cannot do better than proceed with the improvement of Hillside avenue.
