Local Visiting Committee

The Queens County local visiting committee held a meeting at the Town Hall in Jamaica on Tuesday. Owing to the absence of the secretary, and most of the members, only routine business was transacted.

Macadam Road Commissioners Meet

The macadam road commissioners of the town of Jamaica held a meeting Wednesday in the Town Hall. President Dunton, Secretary Lester, John O'Donnell and John M. Crane were present.

secretary Lester stated that of the $47,915.02 balance on hand, $31,647.31 had been expended, leaving $16,267.71. To this amount was to be added $10,504 that County Treasurer Dykes had expended to pay the interest on the bonds. This sum, however, would be replaced, so that the amount really available was $26,771.71.

Engineer Conklin's bill for surveys and maps for the South street improvement was ordered paid, and a bill of $356.25, presented by Engineer McLaughlin for similar work on Hillside avenue was referred to Counselor Van Vechten as to the authority of the board to audit it, as Hillside avenue was not included in the macadam road system.

Commissioner O'Donnell stated that the board had waited fifteen months for the village trustees to take some action relative to South street. The commissioners had the authority and the means to macadamize it, also that a franchise had been given to a railroad company to lay tracks in that street. Mr. O'Donnell moved that the board advertise for bids for the macadamizing of the street. He said the railroad company could go another route, across Beaver pond and up Sutphin's hill, for instance. Action was deferred until next meeting.
