New York, 1895
The state election is yet a far way off, but that does not prevent ambitious politicians from putting themselves forward. Ex-Supervisor Townsend of Oyster Bay wants the Democratic nomination for Senator. As no other Democrat is likely to want it, his chance of getting it is good enough. Ex-Assemblyman Henry C. Johnson of Long Island City is out for the Republican nomination for Senator. The name of Martin V. Wood is also mentioned for the nomination, and of course Senator Childs will be in it too. Any calculations that are made on the result of the election, should include ex-Mayor Gleason. The candidates will only run in Queens county, and the ex-mayor holds the balance of power.
