Grand Jury Condemns the Management and the Poor Food.
The Kings County Grand Jury recently made an investigation of the county farm at St. Johnland, and has made this presentment on the subject:
"Having made an examination of the county buildings at St. Johnland, the Grand Jury were impressed with the fact that the institution is in a bad condition and improperly managed. The inmates do not appear to be sufficiently or humanely cared for, and the food furnished to them is poor in quality and improperly prepared. We recommend that the institution be transferred to the care of the State authorities without unnecessary delay."
The St. Johnland farm since its inception has cost the county nearly $3,000,000. It was recently offered to the State for $500,000.
