The Soldiers' Monument

New York, 1895

The Jamaica Soldiers' and Sailors' monument association held a meeting Monday evening. Colonel Fleming presided, and John H. Brinckerhoff recorded. A design for the proposed monument, which is to be erected on Hillside avenue at Bergen avenue, was adopted.

The design is that of F. W. Ruckstule, of New York. The monument is to be twenty feet high from base to apex. Its base will he of granite, surmounted by a figure of Victory in bronze. The monument will cost $8,500, necessitating the raising of more money. It is hoped to have the foundation for the monument laid by Decoration Day. The committee on design were John Fleming, Charles Napier, William S. Cogswell and John H. Sutphin.

Baker Made Chairman

The highway commissioners of Jamaica met at their office in the Town Hall Tuesday evening and organized by electing William C. Baker chairman, Frederick W. Wolff treasurer, and Frank J. Lott secretary.
