The Highway Commissioners Pay Land Damages

New York, 1895

The Jamaica highway commissioners held a meeting at their office in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening. Commissioner Baker presided. An order was received from the county court directing the payments of the awards for land damages for the opening of Oakley avenue, Ozone Park, from Liberty avenue to University Place, as follows: Commissioners fees, $284; Henry A. Monfort, professional services, $344; land damages, $3,301, making a total of $3,929.80.

It is claimed by many of the residents of Ozone Park that the avenue will be of but little benefit, as it runs to land belonging to the Napier estate, which prevents it from going through to Atlantic avenue. At the time the commissioners made their awards Commissioner Baker refused to sign the certificate until directed to by the court.

Jacob Gunther asked that Ward street, Hayestown, which had been open to travel for thirty years, be made a town road. He was directed to make an application in writing.

The secretary was directed to notify John E. Valentine, contractor for forming up and grading Higbie avenue, Springfield, to file his bond at once.

The offer of Mr. Laney of Woodhaven to deed Drake place to the town for a road, and the opening of Napier avenue from the Jamaica road to Atlantic avenue, was referred to Counselor James F. McLaughlin for his opinion.
