Brow-Beating in Politics

New York, 1895

The Republican supervisors in Queens county do not, apparently, stand very much in awe of the county committee, and it is doubtful if any good will come of the attempt to force a distribution of the printing patronage among the Republican papers. In fact, some of the members of the board appear to be in a quandary as to where to turn for Republican papers. In a conversation with the writer one of the supervisors said: "I, for one, would willingly patronize the Republican papers, but where are they to be found? According to my idea, we have no Republican paper, excepting the Brooklyn Times. There are men in the county who run what they are pleased to call Republican papers, but except on rare occasions it would puzzle any one to name their politics if it had to be done by reading their contents."

From the tone of the speaker's remarks, it is a question whether anything will be gained by a brow-beating policy. — Brooklyn Times.
