The Public Business

New York, 1895

COMMISSIONERS WANTED TO APPRAISE TOWN HALL LAND.

The Highways Damaged by Snow and Ice — Excise Commissioners Getting Ready to Prosecute — Trustee Van Allen Starts an Inquiry About the Town Tax Levy.

The town board held a meeting at the Town Hall on Friday. Supervisor Everitt presided. Justice J. Maynard Kissam met with the board for the first time. Justice Lester, committee on hydrants at Richmond Hill, reported that he found all the hydrants in place as reported by the water company.

Justice Lester called attention to the opinion of Judge Bartlett as printed in THE FARMER in the matter of condemning the property adjoining the Town Hall for public purposes. The matter had been hanging fire for the past six months, he said, and he believed that commissioners to appraise the property should be appointed at once.

Supervisor Everitt said that the commissioners would be appointed by Counselors Van Vechten and Monfort, if they could agree.

Justice Lester, of the Town Hall committee, reported that the committee had placed fire insurance for $43,000 on the Town Hall.

The following bills were ordered paid: Jamaica gas company, gas for Town Hall for month of December, $30.75; Jamaica electric light company, light furnished Town Hall for month of December, $41.60.

The bill of Abraham A. Wyckoff, for services as overseer of the poor for the month of December, was cut down. He charged for Christmas day and for one Sunday.

Justice Kissam was appointed on the committee on town burial ground.

Seven leases for oyster lands in Jamaica Bay were granted as follows:

John G. H. Bedell, 2½ acres, $12.50; Edward Dooley, 2 acres, $10; Abraham Van Siclen, 3 acres, $15; William P. Amberman, 1½ acres, $7.50; Seaman Watts, 3 acres, $15; Cornelius Remsen, 1 acre, $5.

After the adjournment of the board A. H. Bokee, the retiring Justice, was presented with a revolving book stand. Supervisor Everitt made the presentation speech. Mr. Bokee made a happy reply. Subsequently refreshments were served at the Chub Club.
