A Proposed Flushing Improvement

New York, 1895

A job was started in Flushing to spend $100,000 for highway improvements. A bill was sent to the legislature to give the job effect. Four commissioners were named in the bill, George Pople, the Supervisor; I. J. Merritt, John Taylor, and Joseph Oppenheimer. Mr. Pople knew nothing of the matter, and his name was insetted in the bill without his knowledge. The people are up in arms against the bill. Counselor Harrison S. Moore has written a letter to Senator Childs denouncing the job and Mr. Oppenheimer in unmeasured terms.

Sold to the State for $1

The Kings County Supervisors by a vote of 19 to 8 approved on Monday the proposition to sell to the State for $1 the big St. Johnland farm at King's Park which cost the county nearly $3,000,000, and to lease the Flatbush Asylum to the State for an annual rental of $1. It is now expected that as soon as the necessary legislation has been secured the State will relieve the Kings county authorities of the care of both institutions. It is calculated that the county will save nearly $250,000 a year by the transfer.
