New York, 1895
Supervisor at Large Fitchie has vetoed the joint resolution of the Queens and Kings counties Supervisors providing for a lift bridge over Newtown creek at Manhattan avenue, Greenpoint, and Vernon avenue, Long Island City. The resolution passed both bodies. Mr. Fitchie says that he vetoes the resolution because the boards have jointly engaged John J. McLaughlin as engineer to superintend the erection of the bridge. He says that as the inventor of the lift bridge would have to be paid a percentage on all money spent, the engaging of McLaughlin would only incur an extra expense.
Lots of Candidates in Flushing
Politics is beginning to boom in the town of Flushing, and candidates are popping up in all directions. There is a bill before the legislature now to make the term of office of the Supervisor and town clerk of each town in the state one year instead of two. The introducer of the bill claims that there is no interest taken in an election when the highest office is that of justice of the peace. This feeling has manifested itself in Flushing.
