Won't Pay for the Children

New York, 1895

Mayor Sanford on Saturday notified the sisters of St. John's hospital and St. Joseph's home in Astoria that the city would no longer pay for the care of children in the respective homes unless they were properly committed by the authorities. The mayor says the city has been imposed upon to the extent of thousands of dollars by footing bills that should have been paid through other sources. The mayor said that in the bill of the sisters of St. Joseph he found that seventeen children were committed by the county judge, while in fifteen other cases the parents of children resided in Philadelphia, Jersey City and other places.
