A Bad Nomination

New York, 1895

The Democratic convention made a serious blunder by placing in nomination for Assessor George A. Shipley. As a citizen he represents nothing, not being even a small tax payer. His nomination seems to have been a concession to Henry J. Bookman, the saloon-keeper. The party should have nominated the very best man for this position, which is as important as any in the town, every property owner having a direct personal interest in it. Thu FARMER cannot consistently ask Democrats to support Mr. Shipley, for his membership in the board of Assessors would be a calamity.

A Lodge for Stony Brook

About forty members of the different odd fellows' lodges of Suffolk county met at Odd Fellows hall, Sag Harbor, last Wednesday. They approved the application for a lodge at Stony Brook. George C. Raynor of Sag Harbor was elected district deputy grand master, subject to the approval of the grand lodge, and De Witt C. Talmage of Easthampton was elected district grand secretary.
