Indians Don't Like Farming

New York, 1895

The Shinnecock Indians on the reservation near Southampton are desirous of selling off their lands. The tract consists of about two square miles of land of great fertility, but the half breeds do not seem inclined to follow farming. For a number of years they have leased their holdings to farmers in the neighborhood.


Fire at Syosset

The summer residence of Theodore Lewis, at Syosset, was destroyed by fire Thursday evening. Nothing could be done to prevent the destruction of the building.


Sentenced by Judge Garretson

In the court of sessions on Monday Judge Garretson sentenced the following prisoners: Luke A. Malloy, burglary, Elmira reformatory; Eva K. Schmidt, bigamy, one year and four months in state prison.


Failure at Promised Land

Jonas Smith, a manufacturer of fish oil and guano at Promised Land, Suffolk County, on Tuesday made a general assignment for the benefit of creditors to Charles J. Kircher, of New York.
