Two Fires at Patchogue

New York, 1895

Roe's Hotel, at Patchogue, caught fire Friday night. There were a number of guests in the house. The fire was confined to the cellar, however, and not much damage was done.

A few minutes after the hotel fire was subdued flames broke out in the old Warner residence, near the South Bay. The house burned like so much tinder. It was unoccupied.

Gifts to the Historical Society

The Suffolk County historical society has been presented by George B. Wells of Baiting Hollow with a brick made in Holland and brought to this country by Nicholas Vechte. This brick was one of a cargo used in building Vechte's house in Brooklyn. That house was built in 1699 and was afterward known as the Cortelyou house.

In Favor of the Canal

Congressman McCormick is in favor of the scheme to build a canal from Newtown Creek to Flushing Bay. He says that he will ask the Government to make a survey of the water and tides about the creek and bay and find if a canal would be feasible. The Congressman thinks that the canal would improve the value of land in Flushing and Newtown.
