$1350 Verdict for Slander

New York, 1895

A Rockville Centre scandal was ventilated before Justice Barnard, at Long Island City, on Friday. Mrs. Abigail Pearsall sued Jacob Van Vleit, who keeps a candy and stationery store, for $5,000 damages for circulating slanderous stories about her. The jury returned a verdict of $1,350 in favor of Mrs. Pearsall.


Arbor Day Reception

The Arbor Day reception at the Children's Home, Mineola, will take place Saturday afternoon. There are between 60 and 70 children in the Home. The exercises will consist of singing, recitations, and other interesting features, and in addition there will be an afternoon tea.


The Soft Coal Nuisance

By way of renewing the fight against the soft coal nuisance on the Long Island railroad, the Long Island City authorities have brought two actions to recover from the railroad fines of $100 for violations of the orders of the Board of Health.
