New York, 1895
District Attorney Noble began his official career by grabbing an increase of salary for his father, whom he appointed Assistant District Attorney, though the old man was in no condition to perform the work, and soon became paralyzed. The new Assistant District Attorney made a grab for more salary for this year, and got it. Thus the salary of the Assistant District Attorney has been increased twice within a year.
Nor has it stopped here. The clerk in the District Attorney's office made a grab for more salary and got it. This clerk is the District Attorney's brother-in-law.
It is a bad year to increase salaries. The times are hard, the taxes have increased, and reductions of pay are the order with all corporations and private establishments. In this state of affairs the people have a right to expect economy in public expenditures.
