The New County Officials

New York, 1895

The men elected last November were inducted into office on Tuesday and the old helmsmen are now in the ranks of the private citizens. County Clerk Sutphin succeeds himself. This gives universal satisfaction. The high record of the office will be maintained. Henry Doht will administer the office of Sheriff for the next three years. The right that is due to every man to be judged fairly on his record will be accorded to Mr. Doht, and it will give THE FARMER pleasure to speak well of him if he shall deserve it, and we hope he will. Mr. Norton made an excellent officer. Every duty imposed upon him by law was faithfully performed, and he can hold up his head and look his fellow citizens squarely in the face with the proud consciousness of a man who feels that in his record there is nothing to regret.

—The Long Island Farmer, Jamaica, N.Y., January 1895 (day and page unknown).

Note: This is just a partial article, because the last paragraph is mostly missing. But the remainder tells of Mr. Johnson of Oyster Bay becoming Superintendent of the Poor.
