Whitestone Can't Pay

New York, 1895

At a meeting of the Trustees of Whitestone on Friday night, Trustee Bleecker offered a resolution, which was carried, that no salaries be paid or bills of any kind contracted for the next three months. The salaried places in the village government are those of Corporation Counsel, police captain, janitor of the village hall, treasurer, and tax collector. This leaves the village virtually without officials, as the incumbents will refuse to serve without pay. The trustees say there was no alternative for them. By the time three months' suspension of business shall have expired the year's taxes will have been collected, and the village can then resume operations.

Herman Doscher was chosen Tax Collector in place of Alfred Wilmott.
